چکیده

We performed a hydrodynamical cosmological simulation of the formation of a Milky Waylike galaxy in a warm dark matter (WDM) cosmology. Smooth and dense filaments, several comoving mega parsec long, form generically above z ∼ 2 in this model. Atomic line cooling allows gas in the centres of these filaments to cool to the base of the cooling function, resulting in a very striking pattern of extended Lyman-limit systems (LLSs). Observations of the correlation function of LLSs might hence provide useful limits on the nature of the dark matter. We argue that the self-shielding of filaments may lead to a thermal instability resulting in star formation. We implement a sub-grid model for this, and find that filaments rather than haloes dominate star formation until z ∼ 6, although this depends on how stars form in WDM. Reionization decreases the gas density in filaments, and the more usual star formation in haloes dominates below z ∼ 6, although star formation in filaments continues until z = 2. 15 per cent of the stars of the z = 0 galaxy formed in filaments. At higher redshift, these stars give galaxies a stringy appearance, which, if observed, might be a strong indication that the dark matter is warm.

The Hα luminosity-dependent clustering of star-forming galaxies from z ∼ 0.8 to z ∼ 2.2 with HiZELS

We present clustering analyses of identically-selected star-forming galaxies in 3 narrow redshift slices (at z = 0.8, z = 1.47 and z = 2.23), from HiZELS, a deep, near-infrared narrow-band survey. The HiZELS samples span the peak in the cosmic star-formation rate density, identifying typical star-forming galaxies at each epoch. Narrow-band samples have well-defined redshift distributions and ar...

First Structure Formation: I. Primordial Star Forming Regions in hierarchical models

We investigate the possibility of very early formation of primordial star clusters from high–σ perturbations in cold dark matter dominated structure formation scenarios. For this we have developed a powerful 2–level hierarchical cosmological code with a realistic and robust treatment of multi–species primordial gas chemistry, paying special attention to the formation and destruction of H2 molec...

Microwave Background Anisotropy and Large Scale Structure in Warm Dark Matter Models

Large scale structure and microwave background anisotropies are studied for warm dark matter models. Two warm dark matter candidates are considered: gravitinos and sterile neutrinos. Linear large scale structure properties such as σ8 and the excess power are calculated, as well as microwave background anisotropies. A rather robust feature of warm dark matter models is that the large scale struc...

Tracing Cosmic Chemical Evolution with GRBs

Abundance measurements with bright background light sources, such as quasars and GRBs, probe the large-scale distribution and physical state of evolving, coupled gasstar dark matter structures in the Universe. Not all baryons inferred from BBN and the CMB are accounted for in the local Universe; a significant fraction resides in warm-hot tenuous gas filaments tracing the large-scale distributio...

Thermal evolution of the primordial clouds in warm dark matter models with keV sterile neutrinos

We analyze the processes relevant for star formation in a model with dark matter in the form of sterile neutrinos. Sterile neutrino decays produce an Xray background radiation that has a two-fold effect on the collapsing clouds of hydrogen. First, the X-rays ionize the gas and cause an increase in the fraction of molecular hydrogen, which makes it easier for the gas to cool and to form stars. S...
